What’s Gone Wrong

I keep my head down, I’m not controversial…I try and stay neutral on most issues convincing myself that nothing I say or do will make much difference …. but I do wonder sometimes why we, as a nation, blindly walk into problems.

We knew that mobile phones were a bad idea for children, yet we’ve pushed them onto our offspring with no thought as to the consequence.

We’re aware of the dangers of social media but the government are only just cottoning on to the problems being caused.

We already know about the dangers of AI from watching the sci-fi movies like Terminator – yet we push ahead as though completely oblivious to the issues.

We stand and watch as the major employers, such as Amazon and Apple, reduce their staff numbers and replace them with artificial intelligence systems.

We allow ‘working from home’ which helped during the pandemic – but even when the Covid situation is in hand, we allow workers to dictate that they’re not coming back in to the office.

In allowing this to happen, we are somehow rubber stamping the need for an automated workforce that simply gets the job done without complaining.

To me, we seem to be sleep walking into our next set of problems.

Without jobs, people will become more reliant on state handouts.

Without jobs, people will become listless and bored.

Without ambition to progress within a role, people will lose the fire that pushes them forward and gives satisfaction from a job well done.

Without jobs, people will have set incomes based on the benefits system – this helps nobody and creates a society reliant on others to maintain a lifestyle to which no-one will aspire to.

I’m assuming that the rapid march of AI is all about making the rich folk …richer? The investment and the time being spent must mean there are financial benefits for somebody else up the chain…but is it good for the rest of us?

I guess I’m sounding like a Luddite?

I guess that progress will continue its steady march along the lines already set out …

Still worries me though.
