As a business owner, you are hit daily with choices that will make a huge impact on your business.
A typical day for me;
Mike – the client hasn’t paid, despite numerous attempts to get them to clear their account …. shall we go legal? ….How heavy do you want us to be?
Mike – (insert name)’s cat/dog/fish is ill …can they have time off?
Mike – (insert name)’s son/daughter isn’t well …can they have time off?
Mike – the weather has been awful – the ground is sodden – shall we pull off site or try and finish the job first?
Mike – the client hasn’t paid their last invoice yet – but are pushing us to be on site tomorrow – they’re saying their only payment run is month end and we’ve not been included? Do we still turn up tomorrow?
Mike – we need a new van for team member A, but team member B should really get a van before team member A ….and is getting upset. Team member C owns a bike and has no skin in the game but wants everyone to know he’s not happy about anything.
Mike – we need new computers / phones / coffee machine / stapler / photocopier / office / car / PPE / receptionist / life …
Mike – there is a piece of new legislation which suggests that reading risk assessments is …in itself…risky and needs a further risk assessment doing to resolve any issues. No work can be done until this second risk assessment has been done by a third party – this is called RA RA RA… and should be followed by clapping of hands and jumping in the air.
Mike – a rare butterfly has been seen on a site that we are about to start on – shall we tell anyone or get the bug spray?
Mike – a bird was seen thinking about building a nest on a site that we have already started work on – should we talk to the bird and try and offer it some seed as a motivation to fuck off somewhere else and build its home?
Mike – the inland revenue are on the phone …do you want you speak to them ?
Mike – Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike ….
…and that was just Monday.
Then I go home and Mrs. Clough greets me with…
Mike – did you pick up the shopping?
Mike – the dog needs walking
Mike – the drains blocked
