PENNY DREADFUL

jksl campaign heroes 2 1024x614 1 | Japanese knotweed | JKSL

The ‘Penny Dreadful’ was a publishing phenomenon in the 19th Century as these cheap, sensational, highly illustrated stories became incredibly popular with the Victorian public. Increasing literacy and improving technology saw a boom in cheap fiction for the working classes. ‘Penny Blood’ was the original name for the booklets that in the 1860’s was renamed, Penny Dreadful.

The original stories told daring tales of adventure, initially with pirates and highwaymen, later concentrating on crime and detection. The ‘Penny Dreadful’ was issued weekly with each ‘number’ or episode being eight (occasionally 16) pages long, with black and white illustration on the top half of each page.

The ’bloods’ were incredibly successful creating a vast new readership. Between 1830 and 1850 there were up to 100 publishers of penny fiction as well as many magazines that embraced the genre. At first the ‘bloods’ copied popular cheap fictions love of late 18th Century gothic tales – the more sensational the better – a world of murderous lords, ladies addicted to the study of poison, gipsies and brigand chiefs….men with masks and women with daggers, stolen children, withered hags, heartless gamblers and foreign princesses….

The first ever Penny Dreadful was issued in 1836 titled the ‘Lives of the Most Notorious Highwayman’. ‘Gentleman Jack’ was published for over four years without too much worry for accuracy or continuity (one character was killed …twice)

Japanese Knotweed Solutions have launched their own series of Penny Dreadful, in an effort to raise the profile of INNS (Invasive Non Native Species) and to bring a little culture into the lives of the readership. Currently available is Issue 1 ‘Japanese Knotweed – The Feast of Blood’ and Issue 2 ‘Giant Hogweed – The Giant Cometh’

Please note, the tales are scary and are not meant to be read by children, the faint hearted, home owners or anybody living close to a railway line or river….

MESHTECH REMOVAL

Mesh Tech is a patented technology designed and developed in the UK by Dr Eric Donnelly and Japanese Knotweed Solutions Ltd. It is an environmentally-friendly method of controlling Japanese knotweed.

The main advantages of MeshTech are that it requires no chemical treatment and it causes minimal impact on the sites where it is used. MeshTech can also provide protection of riparian areas against soil erosion – a particular problem where Japanese knotweed grows on riverbanks. It is an environmentally sound solution to a problem which all too often involves significant disturbance to contaminated sites – with damaging consequences to other flora (and fauna), and it is a cheaper solution that removal to landfill.

MeshTech works by using Japanese knotweed’s aggressive growth against it – forcing the plant to sever its own stems as they grow (as shown in the photgraphs below). The method also exposes the plant to increased damage by frost and rot – further weakening the plant. Eventual death of the plant results through exhaustion of the nutrient stores in the rhizome (root system). Mesh Tech is specifically targeted at Japanese knotweed but it can also be adapted to treat giant hogweed. It leaves the overwhelming majority of other plant species relatively unaffected.

JAPANESE KNOTWEED – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW IN 2019

JapaneseKnotweed1 300x225 1 | Japanese knotweed | JKSL

What is the scale of Japanese knotweed in the UK?

Japanese knotweed may have appeared a visually attractive plant when it first arrived in the UK, but it has actually had a really ugly impact on the nation over recent years. The fact that it is such a robust weed has allowed it to take a real hold on many areas around the country, taking root in fields, gardens and possibly even infringing on homes.

Recent reports in national newspaper The Independent estimated that Japanese knotweed had ‘affected over 900,000 UK homes’ and ‘wiped somewhere in the region of £20bn from the UK housing market’ which gives you a glimpse of the sort of negative impact it has had. It also plays havoc with commercial developments – including most notably the 2012 Olympic site in London – with the ability to add major costs and delays.

What are the legal impacts of Japanese knotweed?

There are a range of different legalities with regards to both the presence and spread of Japanese knotweed on your domestic or commercial site. Over on the Gov.uk government website, it informs UK residents that you could be fined up to £5,000 and/or jailed for up to 2 years if you allow contaminated soil or Japanese knotweed plant materials to spread into the wild.

This is something worth making note of, if you are thinking of treating the weed yourself, as Japanese knotweed is a highly robust weed which can regrow from even the smallest root fragments. As well as being a concern for possible regrowth on your site, it is also a huge contamination risk if you try to cut down and dispose of the weed yourself, so it is always worth consulting with an expert.

How do you identify Japanese knotweed?

There are a variety of different characteristics that can help you to identify Japanese knotweed. Some are present throughout the year, others depend on seasonal changes. In summary, the main features for identification of Japanese knotweed include:

– bright green, shovel-shaped leaves

– leaves grow from the stem, in a zig-zag pattern

– pronounced veins, with a red or deep pink stalk

– leaves grow up to 120mm long (other knotweeds reach 400mm)

While these details are useful for identifying the presence of Japanese knotweed at your location, you may still not be sure whether the weed you are looking at is Japanese knotweed. This is why it is always useful to enlist the services of an expert in Japanese knotweed identification to get final confirmation.

In addition to the expert Japanese knotweed service being able to identify if – and where – Japanese knotweed is across your site. Here at JKSL, we can offer an initial identification by looking at a photo of the suspected knotweed if you send one in, with a full site identification then able to take place in person, at which point we can recommend a personalised removal package to suit the needs of your site.

How do you remove Japanese knotweed?

When it comes to finding the ideal treatment and removal for your Japanese knotweed, it very much depends on the future plans for the site and the placement of the plant. It is particularly sensitive if the knotweed is in the vicinity of a water supply such as a river or stream.

There are several key treatments that can be implemented, with each of them offering different strengths. Some of the most common treatments in place include:

– Excavation (followed by either burial or removal to licensed landfill)

– Chemical Treatment (we’ll recommend the best type for your site)

– MeshTech (our own environmentally-conscious removal method)

In terms of selecting the exact best option for your site, it will come down to our removal experts assessing your site and determining your personalised removal package. We’re happy to speak in more detail about our range of removal options.

In fact, at JKSL we offer a 100% removal guarantee, with a range of insurance-backed warranty options to ensure that you are protected against any recurrence of the knotweed for years into the future.

How do I find a Japanese knotweed removal expert?

JAPANESE KNOTWEED (FALLOPIA JAPONICA)

Japanese knotweed is the most widespread and known species of knotweed. There is a distinctive growth pattern of one stem per node, which creates a zigzag design. The leaves are mid-green in colour, fairly smooth and have truncate leaf bases; often compared to a shovel/spade shape. The plant produces loose clusters or panicles, made of tiny, creamy-white flowers, which appear late summer / early autumn.

GIANT KNOTWEED (FALLOPIA SACHALINENSIS)

The leaves of Giant knotweed are much larger and elongated than those of Japanese knotweed. They have heart shaped bases (cordate) and are pointed at the tip. It also grows much taller, 4 to 5m in a single season.  The plant bears dense clusters of small green-white flowers in late summer/early autumn. It is widespread across the UK but much less common than Japanese knotweed.

HYBRID KNOTWEED (FALLOPIA X BOHEMICA)

This is a hybrid species between the Giant knotweed and the Japanese knotweed. This weed is less common than Japanese knotweed in the UK and varies in habits. The darker-green leaves are broadly ovate with a pointed tip and rounded base. The veins are reddish purple. The creamy-white flowers are a dense cluster.

DWARF JAPANESE KNOTWEED (FALLOPIA JAPONICA VAR. COMPACTA)

This plant, also called Polygonum reynoutria, is a dwarf type of the Japanese knotweed. It reaches up to 40 inches in height. It has the traditional zigzag structure of the petiole but the leaves have crinkled edges that are darker green. It produces a leathery texture with reddish veins that are curled into a concave shape. Flowers are clustered and come in pale pink or white colours. The weed is less invasive than the Japanese knotweed.

HIMALAYAN KNOTWEED (PERSICARIA WALLICHII)

This knotweed is known by many names. It has slender with elongated leaves and resembles Giant knotweed and Lesser knotweed. It originates from the Himalayas from South West China to Afghanistan. It is not very common in the UK but is more prevalent in South West England. It can reach up to 1.8 meters high.

The green stems are hairy with a brown sheath at the base of the leaf stalk. Leaves are dark green, leathery, long and slender with a slightly heart-shaped base. Flowers are pale pink or white and bloom in summer or late autumn. They are common in riparian areas where they can survive infrequent flooding.

LESSER KNOTWEED (PERSICARIA CAMPANULATE)

This is also called the Reynoutria or Polygonum campanulata. The weed originated in North India and southwest of China. Although it grows with the same vigour as the other knotweeds, it is less invasive. The leaves come in varied sizes but retain the same growth speed and long shape. It resembles the Himalayan Balsam.

It grows better in moist soil. The veins can be reddish in colour with a herring-bone shape. The inner side of the leaves is felted by small white hairs and is lighter in colour. The zigzag is distinctively absent. The weed is more common in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Selling a property is hard enough, but a slight trace of Japanese knotweed can deter a buyer. Some banks are questioning mortgage opportunities at the hint of Japanese knotweed presence. This is due to the speed and ferocity that knotweed grows. There are several methods Japanese knotweed experts use to get rid of the weed. These methods will be determined by the scale and the magnitude of the spread.

It is important to seek Japanese knotweed services as soon as you suspect the invasive weed. Please contact us if you think you have Japanese Knotweed and we can advise on the best treatment methods for your site.

Could You Identify Japanese Knotweed in Your Garden? November 29, 2021

COULD YOU IDENTIFY JAPANESE KNOTWEED IN YOUR GARDEN?

Japanese knotweed is a highly invasive weed, and without proper removal, you could end up with a real problem. Hiring a Japanese knotweed specialist is the only way to properly ensure complete removal and to ensure you don’t have ongoing problems with this weed in the future. From domestic gardens to allotments, business parks to stately homes, an expert can ensure that you have control over the Japanese knotweed on your site and provide documentation to assist potential future sales. This whole process begins with identification.

Some people may not have a problem identifying Japanese knotweed, but others may not be so confident. Here at JKSL, we specialise in Japanese knotweed identification and removal, so we’ve put together a few tips to help you begin the identification process. The first thing to know is that Japanese knotweed is a non-native invasive weed that can grow pretty tall (averaging 3m). With its large ovate green leaves, zigzag bamboo like stems and dense crown material, Japanese knotweed is a weed you can easily spot.

HOW TO IDENTIFY JAPANESE KNOTWEED?

Usually the plant will start growing in small isolated patches, however in the correct conditions and especially if disturbed its likely to spread very quickly and very easily. You will need to make sure that you are aware of where this weed is in your garden and keep an eye on any new growth. The best time at which you could most easily identify Japanese knotweed is mid-summer and during early autumn. During these times, it has distinctive colours that will help you distinguish it from other surrounding plants. During the spring, it has reddish-purple buds which lengthen into shoots, similar to asparagus in appearance.

By summer, the weed is matured, with its stems being hollow and exhibiting purple speckles that average around 3m high. The leaves, on the other hand, alternate around the stem forming the signature knotweed zigzag pattern. By late summer, its flowers are creamy-white and form a lengthy cluster-spike. The weed mainly spreads underground with its extensive rhizome (root) network, which are primarily dormant during winter but – important to note – are still alive.

HOW TO HIRE EXPERT HELP?

You will need to make sure that you find a reputable company who can manage your Japanese knotweed remediation works. Here at JKSL we’re confident we can offer an industry-leading service, at a highly competitive rate.

Making sure that you take your time to find the right removal expert is important. You don’t want to hire a standard gardening company when you are dealing with a highly invasive weed, that can regrow from small fragments. We’re equipped to provide Japanese knotweed removal for private homes, new housing projects and large commercial premises. Taking the time to research ensures that you hire the right company for your needs, whilst adhering to legislation and best practice.

Japanese knotweed removal is a specialist skill and it is certainly something you shouldn’t just attempt on your own, however well intentioned, you will likely make the knotweed problem worse and potentially increase overall remediation costs.

For more information about our Japanese knotweed removal services and how to deal with minor or major infestations, head over to our website service pages for more information, or get in contact with our team by calling or emailing us today.
