0-60 in 3.8 seconds… August 31, 2016

I have had a variety of cars that are quick off the mark with claims of 0-60 in a little over 3 seconds. The time taken to reach 60 being an arbitrary figure chosen to give comparison between the various supercars that can achieve these type of speeds.

My latest car even has a ‘launch control’ button which when pressed allows you to stand on the accelerator until the engine bleeds …then you simply take your foot off the brake and …everything melts into a blur of noise, smoke and fumes as you fire off into the horizon.

But …I never use any of these attributes.

The roads that we drive on are so crowded that trying to hit 60 in 3 seconds is going to end badly….and …seriously when are you going to use launch control??

205 mph top speed – ‘Really officer, I was just testing what it said in the brochure…’

I’m beginning to see that we are all being conned by an industry that relies on us buying more and more cars and getting rid of perfectly good ‘older’ models well before they should be replaced.

I now look back longingly on my first Porsche and wish that I’d kept it. The model I had was a 993 Carrera 4 ‘S’ – in a burgundy colour. Beautiful car, quick, solid, robust ….but I was tempted by the Turbo model….so traded it in – cashed out a load of dosh and…..was I any better off?

No…

Could I go faster – well maybe – marginally.

It’s taken me a while to realise that the Porsche model range changes every three years. I say changes – it doesn’t really ‘change’ it just gets tweaked. If you weren’t a car enthusiast you’d be hard pressed to note the changes.

A subtle headlight difference, maybe the exhaust pipe has moved from the side to the middle… (or back again) …

…and the 0-60 time has improved by ….0.01 of a second.

The dealers and the salesmen convince you that –

Each car I have had has been slightly better than the one I had previously – but I’m pretty sure that they cannot get much better than the ones I’ve got.

….and on top of the above comments I find myself spending more and more time driving my Fiat Panda 4×4. It’s a simple car – it gets you from A-B very frugally ….and nobody calls you a tosser –

So now that I’m a grown up I’m not going to fall for all this crap – I’m sticking with what I’ve got – and I’m not falling for any of the b******t any more.

Ok ok ok ….after I’ve bought the McLaren.
