Treatment Options for Japanese Knotweed

There are a number of options available for treating Japanese Knotweed.

The best course of action if you know Japanese Knotweed is present is to arrange for Japanese Knotweed Solutions to undertake a full site survey. This will identify the extent of the infestation as well as other important factors on site such as the presence of a watercourse and protected species. Following the survey, if the site is to be developed we can study your development plans and come up with the most cost effective and timely solution to your problem.

Chemical Treatment

The most cost effective eradication method is a programme of chemical treatment, over a period of time appropriate to the chemical used, which is determined by the site’s environmental sensitivity. JKSL offer a robust strategy of chemical treatments, using chemicals and methods approved by the Environment Agency & SEPA, overseen by their BASIS qualified practitioner (ID - E/5620/ICMAH). All chemical application operatives are trained to the highest NPTC standards demanded by strict UK regulations and monitored by the Company’s stringent quality control procedures.

The Company take environmental responsibility seriously and undergo BASIS Advanced Contractor Certification Scheme (BACCS) audits, a presently voluntary indicator of service quality and environmental compliance which is likely to become a valuable benchmark as economic conditions tighten and the offering of ineffective ‘quick fix’ solutions becomes more tempting to less scrupulous operators.

JKSL are accredited with ISO 14001, are Corporate Members of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and aim to constantly review and improve environmental performance. These are the factors which make the Company industry leaders both in terms of quality of service and environmental awareness.

Excavation

JKSL tailor eradication programmes to suit individual sites and build schedules, as often timescales are imperative in the viability of a given project, making chemical treatment over a period of years a less attractive option. An example being on sensitive sites adjacent to water or protected trees, where the only legal option is a non-persistent approved herbicide which will achieve kill only if used for a 3 – 5 year period.

Selective excavation of areas of growth associated directly with building and earthmoving activities in conjunction with chemical treatment will limit financial losses and removal of material to landfill, while saving further costs by avoiding build delays on site and keeping client operations in contaminated areas within the law.

The Company offers cost effective alternatives to landfill disposal of excavated material, such as encapsulated burial on site, using state of the art root deflecting technology and formation of unobtrusive waste management areas, where excavated material is stockpiled and chemically treated over a period of months before safe reincorporation into development soft landscaping.

Biological

Recent research has indicated an important role for biological methods of controlling Japanese Knotweed, especially on environmentally significant sites not intended for commercial development. Presently such research is concentrated on fungal pathogens and beetle predators of the plant; although as yet no effective bio-control strategy is commercially available.
