Japanese Knotweed Solutions Sponsor Casting for Recovery
Mike Clough, Managing Director of JKSL is this year sponsoring cancer charity Casting for Recovery. As a fisherman himself he is keen to get involved with such a worthy cause.
Casting for recovery brings women new lives through angling. A group of women have accelerated their recovery from breast cancer and enhanced their lives through exercise, sharing experiences and a new interest.
Sue Hunter, who has become one of the top women fly-fishers in Europe tells her story:
To those who have no real knowledge or interest in angling, it may seem like a male
dominated and solitary pastime. What if I were to tell you that this perception could not be further from the truth? I am a passionate fly-fisher, as are my closest friends – most of them female. I have also suffered from breast cancer and it was breast cancer that led me to the sport. Again, you may find this curious, but to many thousands of women it makes perfect sense.
In 2006, I brought a North American initiative called Casting for Recovery over to the UK & Ireland. This is the first programme of its kind to combine therapy and support for breast cancer patients with the gentle art of fly-fishing. We take patients away on retreat (fully funded by the Countryside Alliance, with equipment provided by Orvis) to enable body and mind to get away from the horrors of treatment and aid recovery. Physically, the fly casting action provides the gentle exercise recommended by physiotherapists for joint and soft tissue mobility, whilst mentally, ladies are in tranquil, beautiful surroundings with people who know what they are going through and are there to help. Up and running in North America and Canada for several years now with an incredible success rate, we are only just getting started over this side of the Atlantic. With three retreats under our belts already, all held at Duncton Mill in West Sussex, we have two more confirmed for 2008 and are looking forward to bringing many more brave ladies together to meet new friends, have fun and learn fly-fishing. Many of the eleven participants at Duncton in September – all of them first-time fly-casters – have been out fly fishing again, making it easy to see why fly-fishing is known as a sport for life.
We look forward to welcoming many more devotees over the next few years! “As a fly fisherwoman, fly tier and breast cancer expert, I heartily support Casting for Recovery as one of the best programmes for breast cancer survivors that I know.” Dr Susan Love.
JKSL will be sponsoring the Casting for Recovery dinner at The Peacock in Rowsley on the 6th October. For more information click here
