Shortfall on Housing Pledge
Apparently the new housing minister Grant Shapps is going to miss his targets in his first year in office!
When in opposition Shapps said he ‘wanted more homes built each year than the Labour government averaged over the last decade’. Unfortunately according to his own departments figures 147,000 houses have been built on average over the last ten years. However only 100,000 are forecast to be built this year with perhaps 120,000 next year.
It is hoped that Mr Schapps will encourage local authorities to approve housing developments by increasing incentives until development is too good to refuse.
Many of the areas highlighted for new housing developments are blighted by Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) and require a more pro-active policy for preparing them for development.
Japanese Knotweed can be cheaply and effectively eradicated when timescales are not an issue. It is only when left until development is imminent that costs rise.
It is hoped by Japanese Knotweed Solutions Ltd that a more long term approach to management of the issues surrounding Non Native plants will make more efficient use of the limited funds that are available.
Let’s not see money wasted in removing knotweed infested soil to landfill – lets see efficient longer term cheaper strategies employed.
