Be Plant Wise!

‘Whether you are interested in the environment or not, the problems caused by invasive non native species affect us all. For a start they cost us billions of pounds, it has been estimated that they may costs as much as £2 billion every single year in Britain alone’ - GB non-native species secretariat.

We need to somehow get people more interested in the environment. Each and every one of us needs to play a role in reducing and managing the impact of invasive non native species. It is important to remember that the effects are not a ‘one off’ event – they cannot be controlled by a working party in one visit, or one ‘action day’.

Once a species has established then it will take several years of repeat visits and constant vigilance to control and manage the situation – complete eradication may never be fully achieved.

‘Be Plant Wise’ is a campaign by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) which encourages people to stop the spread of invasive non native species.

‘Be Plant Wise – by not moving pond plants around. Even the tiniest of fragments can lead to massive problems, so be careful when maintaining your pond and disposing of waste water. Any waste should be emptied away from streams, rivers, ponds, lakes or drains that flow into them.’ GB non-native species secretariat.
